The twins finally have their sweaters... Feb. 18th, 2009 @ 04:00 pm
I've finally finished making the twins' stripey sweaters. I only started them in 2006

I'd knitted the front and sleeves for both sweaters and then stopped.

So, I knitted the backs at the weekend and finally sewed them up in this morning. I used Rowan's Kid Silk Haze and J&S Shetland lace weight. I wanted an oversized look so they are a larger scale than normal for this size of doll.

Knitting again Feb. 16th, 2009 @ 11:39 am
I didn't realise I'd deserted LJ for so long, not that a month is long but you know, a lot happens.

I've rediscovered the absolute joy of knitting for my dolls. It is so relaxing and absorbing. I can lose myself completely in concentrating on tiny stitches and working out the pattern. I have heaps of ideas again and have been writing them down before I forget.

Anyways, I made this sweater for RIME last week. It's based on a pattern in an old Rowan Magazine, I've always loved it and hoped it would work in miniature. I'm not entirley happy with the cables, they seem a little bulky and there's not enough twists but it's something I can work on.

I made me a hat! Nov. 15th, 2008 @ 01:33 pm
It's Noro - vember! I made myself a hat from Noro Kureyon. This pattern is very popular on Ravelry and I can see why. It was fun to knit.

The hat on me:

and the hat on Matty the glass head (because even if your head is made from glass you need to keep warm in November!):

Clothes Aug. 1st, 2008 @ 11:14 am
I discovered this a couple of days ago - The Brown Dress Project about a woman who wore the same brown dress every day for a year.
The project was started 3 years ago and so was over 2 years ago. Nevertheless I find it fascinating.

The same evening I watched Trinny and Susannah - the usual thing where they yell at shoppers for buying the wrong clothes. However, it was announced that "statistics show that while the nation spends £30 billion a year on clothes, 80% of garments purchased are never worn". Not surprising.

I went to a wedding last weekend, and the Friday before I panicked, didn't know what to wear so spent nearly all day looking for clothes and bought 3 potential outfits. I haven't been clothes shopping in ages and found it quite stressful. For a start all the clothes are geared up for younger people, and I hate these silly, little cap sleeves/puff sleeves that have suddenly started to appear on shirts/dresses. I like plain stuff. Simple.

In the end I wore a plainish dress that was on sale for £12.50!!!! (but it was too long, hence my grumpiness) and a shrug that I had knitted myself.

I still felt a little uncomfortable though *sigh*. My self esteem has hit a real low these last few months.

I must buck up!

desk top meme Jun. 29th, 2008 @ 02:05 pm
I've really enjoyed seeing the desktop pictures, appeals to the very nosey side of me.

Here is mine....I hardly ever have pictures of dolls as my desktop. This is a picture from a knitting pattern I recently bought in Ravelry.........I love polar bears and hope to make these soon (after everyhting else I want to knit!!)

PS: Thanks very, very much for the comments on my last post, I'll reply to them soon. ^__^

The New:

Tried to view the new Knitty Winter last night but I think their bandwidth got overloaded!! It's flying this morning!

First impressions - I like these......

future projects: knitty winter 2007

Chevrolace socks.
Tudora neck wrap.
Quant head band.
Gloves can be deceiving.

I really like the gloves, especially as they are in Rowanspun 4-ply, which I have.
It's fab to see glove patterns with fingers. I do like fingerless mittens a lot but I love, love, love gloves.

The socks look interesting, the neck wrap practical and the head band just a fun knit.

The Old:

I was looking through some old knitting magazines and came across this - from Jaeger Handknits JM01 (1998).

I think it will look good in black and cream, which I have loads of in Forsell 4-ply.
I think it will look good a bit longer too....maybe a couple of inches....

Maybe I'll start it or maybe I'll wait until next year.
» Extra Texture: Glove Love
I was getting a batch of gloves ready for ebay and included these, but after seeing how well they matched my t.shirt and cardi, I decided to keep them. I made these a while ago now, one of my designs - part of my old knitwear business. I used to love making gloves a lot - they're a great way to experiment with different yarns and patterns.

poppy gloves

I loved this poppy design the best, I remember I was very proud of it!!

The main colour is a lambswool/silk mix by Forsell, called Blarney. It's lovely and soft, both to knit and to wear.
» Extra Texture: Houndstooth Devotion
I collect Houndstooth pictures, did you all know?

From a 1959 Vogue knitting magazine......I can't believe this is knitted!! A-mazing.

and

houndstooth: overblouse

then from 1995 - a scan of "Miss Christie" pattern by Kim Hargreaves from Rowan Magazine #18.

houndstooth: Miss Christie

and from 2001 - a scan of "Denny" pattern by Kim Hargreaves from Rowan "A Season's Tale". Identical to Miss Christie apart from the pockets, I think.

houndstooth: Denny

This is me......

houndstooth: Denny sleeves

The sleeves were already done a while ago. Now I just have to decide whether to re-knit the body all in one up to the armholes? Previously it was done in separate pieces and the sewing was horrendous (and body was a little small).
» remember, remember,
We went to our local Fireworks Display last night. Fireworks to the Sound of Queen! It was great fun.

I have always loved Bonfire Night. I remember, as a child, something very spooky and magical about being outside at night, fire and sparklers and noise and scary masks (I loved the Guy Fawkes masks in neon colours that you could buy at the local newsagents - wish I'd kept one). And the greens where old armchairs and doors and other rubbish were piled up for the bonfire. And hoping it wouldn't rain!

There's something about the "first week of darkness" after the clocks go back, coupled with the almost forbidden naughtiness of making huge amounts of noise in public that has always made Bonfire Night special for me.

When I moved to Brighton I used to go the the Lewes display. It was so dark, running along the alleys and streets, hearing the noise, and then arriving at the torchlit procession, with huge exploding models, pagan ritual and a hilarious anti-Papist theme. What a mixture, and thousands of people crushed into the narrow winding streets.

I think it's funny that a lot of people misconstue why we celebrate. We celebrate that Guy Fawkes didn't blow up Parliament.

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up King and Parli'ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
» Extra Texture: Can I just say.........
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Ravelry! It was a thoroughly miserable weekend weatherwise but I didn't care when I had Ravelry to explore. I've been adding a few projects and photos and I think the links are fantastic. It's wonderful to have your favourite designer's works all in one place - mine being Sarah Dallas. I'm finding it all very inspiring, which is great as I kinda lost the point of knitting recently. I sometimes feel that too many people seem to knit just to tick off lists and I was worried that I might be doing that too. It's very easy to get caught up.

So I'm slowing things down, making sure that what I want to knit is what I want to wear/use ....and that the yarn I knit with, I also enjoy using.

I'm finding Ravelry is very helpful in making decisions.
» Extra Texture: New scarf
Finally, I think I've picked the right pattern for this yarn! This will be it's 3rd outing.

noro scarf: the beginnings

First I made "Mavis" from one of the Noro books but it turned out too big and looked like a jumper from the 70s. Nothing wrong with jumpers from the 70s at all but it's not what I'm wanting now! So I undid it and made the cropped cardigan from "Fitted Knits" instead - the stripes were thinner because of the all in one piece. I completed this and sewed it up and did the i-cord and tried it on and thought - I will never, ever wear this!!

So I undid it last night while watching Heroes.

And this afternoon I cast on for the multidirectional scarf and I love it so far! This colourway is much better as blocks, rather attractive I think.

» Extra Texture: I love this picture
I love this picture for lots of reasons - the fabulous knitwear with stripes, collars, pockets and tasselled hat, the motorbikes.....and the cigarettes. I love pictures of knits and fags!! Because you don't see them anymore. *cough* (oh but smokey knitwear is urgh).

The Debenham sisters on their motorbikes, 1925.

This was in the Sunday papers, advertising a new book - "Singled Out: How Two Million Women Survived Without Men After The First World War" by Virginia Nicholson.

I'm interested in buying this, it sounds very interesting. My Great Aunt Jessie never married after losing her sweetheart in WW1, she was the archetypal old lady in the end, living with lots of stray cats.
» Extra Texture: Jitterbug Ball
Jitterbug Fruit Coulis - "Crushed berrries as they mix and swirl. Radiant purples, pinks and reds jump and twist. Splash out with this mid summer madness."

This is what I made:-

And I love these socks, they're so comfortable! I finished them a couple of days ago, decided in the end to use the pattern on the ball band as I just wanted to see how the colour works in plain stocking stitch.
